Edwin was living in Kerrville, TX when he entered the service and was a member of 68th Fighter-Interceptor Squadron, 6160th Aircraft Base Group.

On June 3, 1951, he was the pilot of a F-84E Thunderjet fighter from the 524th Fighter Escort Squadron, 27th Fighter Escort Wing. While on a combat mission near Songhon, North Korea, his aircraft received a direct hit by anti-aircraft fire, burst into flames and crashed into a hill. His remains were never recovered.

His name is inscribed on the Courts of the Missing at the Honolulu Memorial.

For his leadership and valor, Captain Dischinger was awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross, the Air Medal with Oak Leaf Cluster, the Purple Heart, the Korean Service Medal, the United Nations Service Medal, the National Defense Service Medal, the Korean Presidential Unit Citation and the Republic of Korea War Service Medal.

Captain Edwin R. Dischinger, son of Mr. and Mrs. E. R. Dischinger of Kerrville, Texas, was born March 6,1924 in St. Louis, Missouri. He attended Bel Nor Grade school and Normandy Junior and Senior High School there until October 1939 when the family moved to Kerrville, Texas. He then attended Tivy High School and graduated in May 1941. He was an accomplished musician and received two scholarships in music. He attended St. Edwards University in Austin, Texas for two years.

In June 1943 Edwin joined the U.S. Air Force, and after a year's training became a Navigator and Radar Operator on a B29, and received his commission in June 1949 at Hondo,Texas. He was an instructor for a short time and was then sent to the island of Tinian in the Pacific. After the was was over he was sent to Clark Field in Manila and returned home in August of 1946.

He entered the University of Texas for one year and in October 1947 was recalled into the Air Force. He became a Jet Pilot and was stationed at Hamilton Air Force in San Francisco, California. In January 1950 he came out of the Air Force and once again returned to the University and in August of 1950 was called back into the Air Force.

In March 1951 Captain Dischinger was sent to Japan, where he flew 69 missions over Korea. In May 1951 he received the Distinguished Flying Cross and Aid Medal. On June the third he was killed when his jet was shot down over North Korea. Death came at the age of 27."
