Thus sadly to say, he was one of the Union soldiers who's bodies were "buried where they fell, if they were buried," according to military records for the Battle of Vicksburg, Mississippi.

Enlisted in Company A, Wisconsin 14th Infantry Regiment on 9 December 1861.

14th Regiment, Wisconsin Infantry:

Organized at Camp Wood, Fond du Lac, Wisconsin, and mustered in January 30, 1862.
- Enlistment term: 3 years
- Mustered out on Oct 9 1865 at Mobile, AL
The regiment left the State for St. Louis, Missouri on March 8, then moved to Savannah, Tennessee., March 23-28.

SERVICE:
- Battle of Shiloh, Tennessee, April 6-7, 1862.
- Advance on and siege of Corinth, Mississippi, April 29-May 30.
- Provost duty at Pittsburgh Landing, Tennessee, till July 23, and St. Hamburg till August 23.
- Battle of Luka, Mississippi, September 19, 1862.
- Battle of Corinth, Mississippi, October 3-4, 1862.
- Pursuit of Ripley October 5-12, 1862.
Grant's Central Mississippi Campaign:
Operations on the Mississippi Central Railroad November 2 to December 23, 1862.
- Moved to Moscow and duty along Memphis & Charleston Railroad till January 10, 1863.
- Moved to Memphis, Tennessee January 10, then to Young's Point, Louisiana, January 17 and to Lake Providence, Louisiana, February 8.
- Movement on Bruinsburg and turning Grand Gulf April 25-30.
- Battle of Champion Hill May 16, 1863.
- Siege of Vicksburg, Mississippi, May 18-July 4, 1863. Assaults on Vicksburg May 19 and 22, 1863.

At the Siege of Vicksburg the 14th Regiment, Wisconsin Infantry incurred: 22 casualties, 88 wounded and 1 Prisoner of War (POW).

Charles was the oldest son of Isaac Abbey (IV) (1798 - 1826) and Lucinda "Sandy" Bradley (1806 – 1896) of Hope Township, Durham County, Canada West (Ontario, Canada).

He married Phoebe Elizabeth Searle on the 20th of December 1847 in Hope Township, Durham County, Canada West.

Their residences were:
1852, Hope Township, Durham County, Canada West (Ontario, Canada).
1860, Oak Grove, Dodge, Wisconsin, USA.

They had five (5) known children:

~ Mary Jane Abbey Krause (1859 – 1954)
