Clifford B. Gutting
BLACKFOOT – Clifford Benjamin Gutting, 68, former resident of Bingham County, died in the Veteran's Home at Fort Harrison, Mont., Tuesday from a lingering illness and kidney infection.
Mr. Gutting was born on June 23, 1896, in Hyrum, Cache County, Utah, the son of Daniel and Ella Halverson Gutting. During the early years of his life the family lived in Lima, Mont., later moving to Blackfoot where he attended elementary and high school, and where his father owned the Blackfoot Hotel, now the Grand Hotel. Later they moved to Sterling where his father homesteaded a piece of land.
He enlisted in the U.S. Army Dec 12, 1917 and trained at Fr. McDowell, Calif., serving in the medical corps and receiving a number of citations. He received an honorable discharge as corporal June 18, 1919.
Mr. Gutting toured Alaska for two years with a traveling orchestra and often entertained at the Eastern Idaho State Fair with his troupe. For the past four years he lived in the Veteran's Home in Columbia Falls, Mont., He was a member of the LDS Church.
He is survived by two sisters and one brother: Mrs. Charles (Leva) Rich, Pingree; Mrs. Dewey (Valine) Blackburn, Springfield, and Compton D. Goodwin (legal name changed by person) of Salt Lake City.
Funeral services will be Friday at 2 p.m. in the Springfield LDS Ward Church, conducted by Bishop Kenneth Thurston. Burial will be in the Springfield Cemetery. Friends may call at the Howard Packham Mortuary today and at the church Friday, one hour prior to service time.
