Lewis E. Wood of Marshallton, DE, passed away on Thursday, May 31, 2012.
Mr. Wood was born in Stuyvesant, NY on December 29, 1929, son of Lewis and Adelaide (Moon) Wood. He was employed by Winterthur Farms (now Winterthur Museum, Garden and Library) for more than 50 years and as the owner of Wood's Trash Collection service, he was dedicated to serving his many customers over the past 60 years. Mr. Wood, known by his family and friends as Woody, enjoyed working in his vegetable garden and creating outdoor holiday displays around his home.
Woody is survived by his daughter, Nancy Chickadel of Newark, DE; stepdaughter, Alice Peterson of Elmira, NY; stepsons, Robert Reynolds and his wife, Frankie of Perryville, AR and Richard Kendall and his wife, Anne of Wilmington, DE; and 11 grandchildren; 19 great grandchildren; and 21 great-great grandchildren. Woody is also survived by his sister, Betty Jones.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Lucy O. Wood, after 62 years of marriage; his sisters, Margaret Hutchinson and Alice Mae King; and his brother, Robert Wood.
A funeral service will be held at the Doherty Funeral Home, 3200 Limestone Road, Pike Creek, Wilmington, DE on Friday, June 8 at 11:00AM. Family and friends may visit beginning at 10:30AM. Interment will follow the service in the cemetery of the Lower Brandywine Presbyterian Church, 101 Old Kennett Road, Greenville, DE.
The family sincerely thanks the staff at Manor Care Health Services for the kindness and care extended to Woody.
In lieu of flowers, contributions in memory of Woody may be made to Faithful Friends Animal Society, 12 Germay Drive, Wilmington, DE 19804.
