Robert Osborn Merriman was the son of Nathaniel Merriman and his wife Olive Celestia Skinner. His parents divorced and his mother remarried in 1877. Robert O. Merriman married ca. 1895 Rachel Alma Poor b. Sept 1869 Union Twp, Delaware Co IN. Rachel's father had died and her widowed mother Martha Jane (Haynes) Poor sold the family farm and took her daughters to early Bozeman, MT and set up a boardinghouse. The son-in-laws mined while the women kept the boardinghouse afloat. Rachel Alma Poor was a beautiful young woman. By 1900 the young couple were living on Fremont Street in South Butte Township Mt with their first two children. Family descendants said that Robert Osborn Merriman speculated in mines and often had to travel back and forth between Butte Co and other cities, and he and Rachel were often apart on his trips.

Robert Osborn Merriman died 20 Apr 1914 from pneumococcic meningitis with the contributing factor of acute lobar pneumonia. They had been married about 17 years. He was just 44 yrs and 9 mos old at time of death. He left a widow and three sons. At time of death the couple had been living at 825 Highland Avenue, Butte MT. Rachel had her husbands remains taken to Jefferson City for burial. After his death his widow Rachel Alma (Poor) Merriman took up a job working as a waitress at age 47, however she remarried in 1917 to William Wallace Burrell.

Robert Nathaniel 'Bert' Merriman born 15 July 1898 Butte City, Silver Bow Co MT d. May 1964 Tacoma, Pierce Co WA m. Ethel May Howse.

Charles Virgil Merriman b. 27 Apr 1900 d. 23 Oct 1900 from cerebral effusion (swelling/bleeding to the brain). This infant was named for Rachel's brother Charles Virgil Poor.

Millard Phenimore Merriman b. 26 July 1901 Madison MT d. 25 Mar 1981 Great Falls, MT m. 22 Apr 1944 in Tacoma, WA Mrs. Vearle Lowman.
