Full name George Wyllys Gannett

 

Enlisted on 9/4/1861 and mustered Sep. 23, 1861 as a Sergeant in Co. K, 24th Massachusetts Infantry. Resigned for promotion on Jun. 10, 1863

 

On June 18, 1863 was commissioned as a 2nd Lieutenant in Co. E of the 55th Massachusetts Infantry and then two days later he was promoted to 1st Lieutenant and assigned to Company B. The 55th Massachusetts Infantry was the second African American regiment recruited and mustered by the Commonwealth of Massachusetts. Wyllis resigned his commission on June 6, 1864.
