"Mr. Clarke Merchant was born at Oglethorpe Barracks, Savannah, Ga.,
son of Gen. Merchant, first Cadet at U. S. Military Academy, from Albany, N. Y., and of U. S. A., and his wife. Miss Lovekin, of Newburyport, Mass., both of English ancestry. He entered the U. S. Naval Academy, at Annapolis, and graduated there from 1857; served throughout Civil War, becoming a commander in the Navy under Admiral Porter; resigned commission in 1867, and engaged in business in Philadelphia, Pa., where he resided until his death, in the spring of 1904, having become one of that city's wealthiest and most influential citizens. He was President and owner of Merchant & Co., Ltd., and International Sprinkler Co., Philadelphia; Pa, and President of the Schuvlkill Traction Co.; m., 1863, Sarah Watts, dau. of Henry Miller Watts and Sarah Shombery, of Philadelphia, Pa., the latter a schoolmate and intimate friend of the late Empress Elizabeth of the Austrians, by whom she was presented with a beautiful oil portrait of herself, which is now owned by Mrs. Merchant. ---- Another son, Clarke, naval officer, born in Savannah, Georgia, 20 September 1836, was graduated at the United States Naval Academy in 1857, and promoted successively passed midshipman, 25 June 1860, master, 24 October, 1860, lieutenant , 18 April 1861, and lieutenant commander, 3 March, 1865. In the early part of the Civil War he was stationed at the Washington Navy Yard and attached to the " PENSACOLA", and during the latter part of the war was acting executive officer of the " ROANOKE" in the James River. Just as the war was closing he was ordered to the naval academy as executive officer of the " CONSTITUTION ". and "SANTIC". He resigned on 10 August , 1865, and engaged in the mercantile business in Philadelphia.
