He died of disease among friends in camp in Huntersville, Pocahontas County, Virginia, what is now West Virginia*.

*In 1861, West Virginia did not yet exist so he officially died in Virginia, but today that part of Virginia that is now West Virginia.

Son of Samuel Davis Matheny (1796-1881) and Syntha Grimsley (1793-1838). First husband of Nancy Emeline Sims, married about 1852, in Putnam County, Tennessee.
