Private George W. Pool was born in Lauderdale County, Alabama in 1843. In 1852 His father, Langdon C. Pool moved his family to Scott County, Missouri. In 1862, George W. Pool joined the 3rd Missouri Cavalry, CSA. October 18, 1863, Private Pool was captured by the Union Army at Carthage, Missouri. November 18, 1863, he appears on a list of prisoners forwarded from Ft Scott, KS to the Genl. Dist. of the Border. December 11, 1863 he appears on a roll of Prisoners of War and Political Prisoners recieved at the Gratiot Street Military Prison, St Louis, MO from Dec 6 to Dec 10, 1863. January 18,1864, he was transfered from St Louis, MO to Rock Island, IL. January 19, 1864, he arrived at the Rock Island Barracks (POW Prison), Rock Island, IL. February 17, 1864, Pvt George W Pool is listed on a record of Prisoners of War who have died at Rock Island Barracks. He is listed as dying from Interment Fever. (There was an outbreak of Small Pox at the Prison during this time.)

The headstone incorrectly lists his service with Mosby's Rangers, VA; he served with the 3rd Missouri Calvary Vols, CSA with his brother. Per VA, since the headstone is more than 50 yrs old, it is considered historic and will not be corrected.
