Before marrying second wife Marilda E. McCumber Miller, Nathan married Elizabeth "Betsey" Hizer Clark (1830-1884) on 17 Apr.1862 in Fulton Co., Indiana.

It was Betsey's second marriage. She had previously married William Reuben Clark on 23 Jan. 1849. Betsey had four children with William--Sarah Elizabeth (1850-1868), John (1851-1931), Nancy C. (b.1853) and Samuel R. (1854-1935).

Betsey and William must have divorced as he didn't die until 1875 and Betsey married second husband Nathan in 1862. Nathan and Betsey had six children together--Henrietta L. (b.1863), Matilda (b.1865), William H. (b.1867), Eliza J. (b.1868), Alfred J. (b.1871) and Mary Louise (b.1874).

I found the family on the 1870 Census living in Wayne, Fulton Co., Indiana where Nathan was farming for a living. Elizabeth's son Samuel was with the couple along with their first three children. I found them on the 1880 Census, still living in Fulton Co. Samuel was no longer living with the family but Alfred and Mary Louise had joined Nathan and Betsey's other four children.

Betsey died in 1884 at age 54.

Three years later, Nathan married Marilda E. McCumber Miller. It was also her second marriage. She had previously married Alexander O. Miller (1837-1885) in 1873 with whom she had at least four children--Miles A. (b.1874), Horace (b.1875), Julia Arizona (b.1877) and Thomas (b.1880).

Nathan and Marilda had a daughter they named Cora who was born and died sometime between 1887 and 1900. On the 1900 Census, Marilda indicated that she had had six children and that three had survived to that census--Arizona, Thomas, and either Miles or Horace. An unidentified child died sometime between 1875 and 1900.

I found the family living on the 1900 Census, living in Bourbon, Marshall Co., Indiana where Nathan was farming for a living.

Nathan died before the next census in 1903 at age 69. Marilda would remarry in 1910 to Joseph Atha (b.1852) but when she died in 1943, she was laid to rest at Nathan's side with the "Abbott" surname on her headstone.
