James Cannon Coffey was the son of Rev. Reuben and Rachel (Hayes) Coffey.

He enlisted as a Private in Company E, 37th Infantry North Carolina Regiment on Nov. 20, 1861. He was present at the battles of Bull Run, Antietam, Gettysburg, The Wilderness Campaign and the fall of Richmond. He surrendered with his company on April 9, 1865 at Appomattox Court House in Virginia.

He was married to Sarah Evelyn Coffey. Together they raised six sons and four daughters.
