Ethel S. Shumate, 96, of Morriston, FL, passed away on Wed., May 23, 2012 at Ayers Health and Rehab Center in Trenton, FL. A native of West Hamlin, W., Va., she was born Sept. 13, 1915 to Boyhan and Mary (Hayes) Slone, the fifth of seven children. Ethel graduated as Valedictorian of her class at Man High School, Man, W. Va. She moved to Morriston eleven years ago from Pompano Beach, where she had lived for 35 years. Mrs. Shumate was employed with Broward County entrepreneur Preston Henn's various businesses, retiring from the Margate office of his Florida Swap Shop, one of Southeast Florida's most popular tourist attractions. In 1957, Ethel was baptized at the Olive Baptist Church near Barboursville, W.Va. and followed the Baptist faith the rest of her life and along with her late husband Martin Shumate, she enjoyed taking long motor trips. Mrs. Shumate also loved to watch ocean waves and enjoyed reading, especially mystery novels. She is survived by her son, Charles M. Shumate and his wife Mary Ann of Morriston, FL as well as numerous other relatives. In addition to her husband, the Late Martin Shumate (April 8, 2001), she was preceded in death by her six siblings; Ernist, Norma, Joe, Alma, Linville and Richard. A Funeral Service of Remembrance will be held on Thursday, May 31st at 11:00 A.M. at Fero Funeral Home, Beverly Hills, FL with Dr. David Goodroe officiating.
