Evelyn Irene Armstrong, died peacefully at her home in Zion, IL May 29, 2012. She was born August 22, 1925 in Booneville, MS to Daniel Luther and Minnie Pearl Barnes Shook.

She graduated from Booneville High School in 1943 and married Will Lee Armstrong, a Marine, serving in WWII. Following his return from the war they made their home in the Dallas, TX. area. They became parents to a daughter, Patricia, and a son, Terry.

Irene lived in the Zion area for almost fifty years and loved the town she called home. She shared her ministry throughout the Great Lakes Area and was a published writer of music, poetry and books. She loved recording Christian music and her book signings were a joy to her in her later life. She served many years as the Zion Gold Star Mother, laying the wreath during the annual Memorial Day Service in Zion. She was a member of the Church of God in Zion.

She is survived by her daughter, Patricia (Don) Hazel of Tupelo, MS.; her grandchildren, Renee Cameron of Saltillo, MS, Keith (Traci)Hazel of Tupelo, MS; her great-grandchildren, Meghan Sides of Cordova,. TN, Nicole Hazel, Kyle Cameron and Will Hazel of Tupelo. MS, and Wesley Hazel of Mississippi State University, Starkville, MS.; her special great-granddaughter, Chloe Grace McLahenney.; her sisters, Inez Keller of Booneville MS and Bernice Smith of Jackson, TN,; and a brother, Edward Shook of Chattanooga, TN.

She was preceded in death by her parents, her son, Pfc. Terry Lee Armstrong in Vietnam; her sisters, Lucile Ricketts and Grace Counce and brothers. Herbert Shook and Herman Shook.

Services will be held Friday, June 1, 2012 at 6 P.M. Visitation with be from 4 to 6 P.M. prior to the service. Congdon Funeral Home in Zion, Illinois is in charge of arrangements. Burial will be in her hometown, Booneville, MS.

Memorials may be made to Church of God, 2700 Eshcol Ave., Zion, IL 60099 For the Outside Electric Sign.
