Dena Hamilton, age 88, passed away Tuesday, April 24, 2012 in Omaha, Nebraska. Dena was born on April 15, 1924 to Henry Sr. and Hilka (Smit) Horst in Carnarvon, Iowa. She graduated from Wall Lake High School and from State Normal School and Teacher's College in Wayne, Nebraska (now known as Wayne State College). Dena shared a dorm room with Millie Winchell, a friend from Wall Lake.

Dena taught in Harlan and Sioux City, Iowa, before moving to Omaha, where she taught 4th grade at Central Grade School, a part of the Omaha Public School District, until her retirement. Dena was a member of Peace Lutheran Church in Wall Lake, and transferred to First Lutheran Church upon moving to Omaha.

She travelled to Germany in the mid 70's to visit the area where her parents had lived. Dena enjoyed working in her yard, taking walks, sports in general, and specifically Iowa and Nebraska football. She was a big Tom Osborne fan. She kept up on current events and could take part in lively political discussions. Dena was also a fan of "American Idol" and "Dancing With The Stars" TV shows. She lived alone in her home until a fall on April 1st. Dena passed away in Omaha, Nebraska , at the Ambassador Care Center on April 24, 2012.

Dena was preceded in death by her parents Henry and Wilka Horst; husband James Hamilton; brothers Henry, Ubbo, and Jake Horst; sisters Cena Richter, Ann Horst and Jennie Reik. Dena is survived by two sisters, Katie Horst and Henrietta Schultz; brother-in-law Lloyd Schultz; sisters-in-law Bernice Horst and Genevieve Horst; along with numerous nieces, nephews, great nieces and nephews, and great-great nieces and nephews.
