Laura died in 1890, leaving William with a son and two baby daughters. Almost two years later, he married Sylvia Alice Hull on 20 Jul 1892 in Iowa City. They had six children together: Dan, Della, Marcia, Lucile, Sylvia and Alfred.
For most of his career William was a livestock dealer.
He died on September 25, 1938, in Iowa City, Iowa, at the age of 84.
