Annie Lorene (McLaughlin) Adams passed away Wednesday May 6, 2015 in Dallas, Texas at 10:26 AM at the age of 100 years 9 months and 6 days. Lorene affectionely known as "Granny" was the daughter of James Lewis McLaughlin born in 1885 in Indian Territory and died in 1937 in Sulphur Springs, Texas and Killie Melinda (Penny) McLaughlin born in 1897 in Tennessee and died in 1916 in Yantis, Texas. Lorene's paternal grandparents were John Wesley McLaughlin born in 1849 and died in 1929 in Hopkins County, Texas and Sarah Elizabeth (Crane) McLaughlin born in 1854 and died in 1926 in Yantis, Texas. Lorene's maternal grandparents were James Thomas Penny born in 1865 in Tennessee and died in 1920 in Hopkins County, Texas and Jane (Hall) Penny born in 1871 in Tennessee and died in 1933 near Lone Oak, Texas.
Lorene was born August 1, 1914 in Yantis, Texas the same day and place as her cousin Mamie Leona (McLaughlin) Pritchett who survived her in death. Mamie was more of a sister even though a paternal first cousin. They were very close and knew each other for over one hundred years. Lorene was preceeded in death by a full blood baby brother who was born and died in 1916 and six half-brothers and one half-sister namely Dell Ray McLaughlin 1918-1987, Travis McLaughlin 1920-1968, Robert Lewis McLaughlin 1921-1993, Buford McLaughlin 1922-1943, Leon McLaughlin 1926-1995, Lester D. McLaughlin 1929-1991 and Ima Jean McLaughlin 1932-1991 the only sibling of Lorene known to have children namely Martha Nell Lovelady 1950-2009, Caroline, Donald, Lola, Robert and Lonnie Jean Scroggins born 1970 mother of Justin Brown born 2000 and Dale born 2013. Lorene married on September 21, 1940 in Rockwall, Texas to Alva Leo Adams (1911-1999) the son of Charles Columbus Adams 1875-1959 and Georgia Modena (Wafer) 1878-1957. Four children were born to Lorene and Leo Adams: Deanna Joyce (Adams) Vail born 1941, Jerry Wayne Adams born 1943, Barbara Dean (Adams) Potter born 1946, and Margaret Claudia (Adams) Zollicoffer born 1949.
Lorene survived the Spanish flu that killed her maternal grandfather after World War I, the Dust Bowl, the Great Depression and the 1957 Dallas Tornado. She had a good Christian influence from her mother-in-law and was baptized in a pond in Irving, Texas with her husband Alva Leo Adams in October 1942. She was the best cook in the family, resulting in excellent nutrition. She loved cooking fresh vegetables preferably from her big garden in Rains County, Texas; having a wealth of knowledge of horticulture and calling plants and trees by name. She was always hospitable and as a practice, prayed before eating. She had a remarkable memory for dates and keeping up with anniversaries, etc. It is of interest that she never learned to drive an automobile. Regarding all who knew her were the acts of compassion, selflessness, integrity, and courage, she will live on in the hearts of her family and many. It gave Lorene much comfort and joy in the last years and months of her life, in the vale of years, to know that two of her great-granddaughters and one of her great-great-granddaughters were named after her. Another great-granddaughter had a derivative of her name. Many tears were shed at her funeral because she did so many loving acts for her family and those she came in contact with. She truly loved God and all.
