Mary was born the daughter of Revolutionary War hero, Major William Hazzard Wigg (1746 – 1798) and Esther Hutson (1753 – 1789). She married 29 Jul 1790 at St. Helena's Parish in Beaufort, Revolutionary War patriot, Colonel Edward Barnwell (1757 – 1808). She raised her family in the home built by Edward and his brother, Robert known as Barnwell Castle in Beaufort. Stephen B. Barnwell stated in his book, "Story of An American Family "She was a remarkable woman with great influence on her family, and an excellent manager of her large household. She raised not only her eleven children she had by Edward, but also the children of her daughters Esther Heyward, Elizabeth Rose, and Charlotte Cuthbert, all of whom died young leaving small children. She was noted in Charleston for having her eight daughters well married before they were 21. Mary was only 34 when her husband died, but she never remarried and continued living in the Castle until her eightieth year."
