Lawrence Daily Journal-World, Wednesday, December 27, 1967: Police Check Shooting Here
Police Investigation is continuing today into the death of an elderly Lawrence man who was found at his home Tuesday with a fatal gunshot wound in his head.
The man, John C. Curd, 86, was found lying on the back porch of his home at 1507 N.H. St. about 1:30 P.M. Tuesday by Lawrence police officers who were called to the scene. A 38-caliber revolver was found next to him, officers said.
A preliminary report by Dr. James Reed, coroner, indicated Curd died of a gunshot wound at the left side of his head. A complete coroner's report has not been issued and police have not determined if death was by suicide.
Police said Mrs. Marje Withers, a private nurse who lives at the Curd residence, told them she discovered Curd lying on the back porch. She told police she had been caring for Curd for a number of years.
Lawmen said no note was found.
Funeral services for Curd will be 2 p.m. Friday at the Rumsey Funeral Home with Rev. Ronald Sundbye in charge. Burial will be at Memorial Park Cemetery. He is survived by a son, Robert, of Amarillo, Tex., and a daughter, Mrs. Charles Woodlan of Kansas City, Mo.
Curd was a retired railway mail clerk for Santa Fe Railroad. He retired in 1952 after 48 years on the Kansas City-La Junta, Colo., run. He was born Dec. 2, 1881, in El Dorado, and had lived in Lawrence since 1904.
