Rufus, Sr., was the son of Ernest and Hattie Locklear Burns. He married Avie Locklear. His sister, Annie Burns Sampson, is buried at Deep Branch Baptist in Lumberton, NC. Rufus, Sr., and Annie were raised by their maternal grandmother, Francis Locklear, after the death of their mother prior to the 1910 Federal Census.

The following was taken from the Jun. 25, 1976 edition of THE ROBESONIAN:

Rev. Rufus Burns, Sr., 69, a retired farmer and minister of Route 6, Lumberton, died suddenly Thursday at 2:30 p.m. at the home following a short illness. Funeral services will be held at 3 p.m. Sunday at Mount Airy Baptist Church, conducted by the Rev. Roy Maynor and the Rev. T. M. Swett.

Survivors include his widow, Mrs. Avie L. Burns of the home; nine sons, Ernest Burns, Rufus Burns, Jr., Billy Burns, Rev. Bobby Burns, Rev. O. J. Burns, and Joseph Burns, all of Lumberton, Stanford Burns of Pembroke, Delton Burns of Maxton, Grantford Burns of the home; four daughters, Mrs. Maggie Oxendine of Lumberton, Mrs. Betty Lou Kilroy of Germany, Mrs. Lillian McKenzie of Aberdeen and Mrs. Mary Cleveland of Ellerbe; a brother, Charlie Locklear of Lumberton; a sister, Mrs. Mary Jane Sampson of Lumberton; 42 grandchildren; 13 great grandchildren.

The family will receive at Biggs Funeral Home, Saturday night from 7 to 9 o'clock.

Burial will be in the Mt. Airy Baptist Church Cemetery.
