John Thomas Dedman was born near Skipwith and Hallstone, Mecklenburg County, Virginia. He was the son of William Howard Dedman and Elizabeth D. Haile. In the early 1830s he made the long trip from Virginia to the Leatherwood Creek area of east Hickman County. His father managed Weems Springs which later became Bon Aqua Springs.

Mary Ellen, Marcus Lafayette Dedman(named for his uncle), Henreta Francis, John Roland, and Sarah Jane.
