Married Elizabeth D. Haile. Children were John Thomas Dedman, Lenora Ann Dedman, William Howard Dedman, James Monroe Dedman, Eleanor Elizabeth Dedman, Catherine Jane Dedman, and Marcus Lafayette Dedman. Son of John Dedman and Elizabeth White Dedman of Mecklenburg County, VA. He was appointed Postmaster of Hallstone, Mecklenburg County, VA, in the late 1820s and again in the early 1830s. Hallstone is no longer on Virginia maps, but it was north of Skipwith, VA. The federal government misprinted the name of the post office as "Hailstone". Some Virginia marriage records show his middle initial as "D", his wife's middle initial, incorrectly.

After his father's death, he moved from Mecklenburg County to just west of the Natchez Trace north and west of Williamsport, Maury, TN. The move would have been around 1835 after his father's land was sold in estate settlement. He was the manager of Weem's Springs (now Bon Aqua Springs) near Bon Aqua, TN. His daughter Eleanor Elizabeth Dedman married Edward Williams of Williamsport, TN, and W. H. and his wife Elizabeth moved to Williamsport shortly before his death. He had just been elected Justice of the Peace for Williamsport, Maury County, Tennessee, when he died.

His middle name of Howard was from his grandmother Eleanor Howard who married Col. Samuel Dedman in Virginia.
