James William Grubaugh was born in Ashland County, OH to Michael Grubaugh and Mary Ann McFall. He moved with his family to Scotland County, MO and then to Bureau County, IL shortly after his birth. His father died in 1862 as a result of illness incurred with serving in the Civil War and Mary Ann McFall Grubaugh raised all eight children by herself. James William Grubaugh had a twin sister, Rebecca Ann Grubaugh who is also buried at Linwood Cemetery.
James married Elizabeth Long in 1882 in Bureau County, IL and they had one child, Earl Clifford Grubaugh. Elizabeth died in 1890 and James died in 1891, leaving Earl Clifford orphaned. In 1900, Earl is listed with his aunt and uncle in Bureau County.
