Jeremiah was the only child of Enoch and Eliza McMillan Amberson. Jerry lost his father and mother shortly before he was 6 years old.

In 1850 Jerry was living with Julianna and Peter Perchment Jr. She was the only surviving daughter of his grandfather James Amberson and sister to Enoch. Jerry was 6 at the time.
