Son of William Clark Smith and Ency Overton, husband of Hester Ann Gerard and father of Arden Ambrose, Edward Clinton, Charles Richmond, and Hiram Gerard Smith.

Obituary - Charles Riley Smith, aged 86 years, the oldest practicing member of the Suffolk County bar, died on Sunday. Mr. Smith had been failing in general health for some time, and a short time ago went to a sanitarium in Amityville to recuperate, dying there. Mr. Smith was a native of Bayport, and was one of a family of ten sons and four daughters and was a brother of the late Capt. Jacob Smith of Sayville. His father, William Clark Smith, was a farmer and the owner of a number of vessels engaged in the wrecking business on the Florida reefs. Charles R. Smith obtained his education at the local schools and finished at the old Bellport Academy. He engaged in various undertakings. When a man over 50 years he returned to Patchogue, where he took up the study of law in the office of County Judge T. M. Griffing. He was admitted to the bar in 1880, since which time he had built up an extensive practice. Mr. Smith took an active part in the affairs of his town and county. He was an ardent Democrat and had honorably filled the offices of county excise commissioner, highway commissioner, town trustee, member of the Town Board of Audit for sixteen years, and for the same length of time served as a justice of the peace and justice sessions. He is survived by a widow and three sons, Arden A., E. Clinton, and Charles R. Jr., of New York and Brooklyn. The funeral was held at his late home, corner of Ocean Avenue and Church Street, Patchogue, at 1:30 on Wednesday afternoon.
