Tommy had hoped to become the first black man to compete in the Indy 500 but life ending injuries at Trenton, NJ., prevented that.
Thompson was a bachelor, who worked at the AT&T offices in New York and raced on the weekends. He also did much of the work on the BAR racing team 1978 Lola, Formula Super Vee. Tommy didn't have the funding to run Indy, but had hoped to do well and attract some sponsors.
The accident occurred when the car in front of him veered to avoid a slow racer, Tommy then rode over the wheels of that car and flipped out of the track. Thompson lived for four days before dying from his injuries.
