US Congressman. A member of the Republican Party, he served Virginia's 9th District in the United States House of Representatives from 1953 to 1955 and 1967 to 1983. His father was a salesman and hardware store proprietor, his mother was a school teacher, he showed a keen interest in politics at an early age. He served with the US Navy during World War II (he remained with the US Naval Reserve) and upon his return home, he attended Virginia Polytechnic Institute and attained a bachelors degree in Political Science from there. He later studied law at the University of Virginia (leaving prior to attaining his degree) and landed a job as a reporter in his hometown of Bristol, Virginia. He initiated his political career serving as an assistant campaign manager for his local district. In between his Congressional terms, he helped run his family's furniture and carpet businesses. Nicknamed the "Bald Eagle of the Cumberlands", Wampler is perhaps best remembered as a tireless advocate for the coalminers of the Appalachian region of Virginia and served on the Congressional Agriculture Committee.
