Ernie was the son of George and Vinnie Newton Cowan. He married Annie Laura Tow on March 16, 1942. Together Annie and Ernie had two children, Dixie and Wayne. He served in the Pacific during WWII having been drafted early in 1942. He attended bakers training to become a baker in the Army.
One story he would tell about his time in the the service was preparing pumpkin pies for Thanksgiving, over 300 of them. They had been working all day and prepare these pies and finally at about 4am he sits down with a piece of pie and a coffee. Taking one bite, he knew something had gone terribly wrong. It was evident that the sugar and salt containers had been mixed up....they had to start ALL over to ensure the other service members had pumpkin pie for Thanksgiving.
Unfortunately, his wife Annie preceded him in death in April 1978. Later he married Helen L. Ferguson on Jan. 15, 1983. Ernie died March 29, 1990 from respiratory arrest after a total hip replacement.
