"In September of the following year a notice in the Philadelphia Album (Saturday, September 17, 1831) called attention to a new weekly journal The Psyche, "designed principally for the female portion of the community." Proposals for this paper were issued by Mrs. O'Sullivan Addicks, who declared that her aim was "to advocate the practice of the milder virtues, cultivate the mind, improve the manners, and dispose the heart to kindly affections." The Album remarked that Mrs. Addicks looked to the ladies of the region for patronage, and commented kindly upon "her able pen." Whether this lady's efforts to enlighten her sex by means of a weekly, at four dollars a year, met with any response is doubtful, as no copies of such a periodical seem to have survived."
