John Rickert was born as Johann Rückert in Stockstadt am Main. After the death of his father Philipp Rückert (1808-1854) his mother Eva (born Nehr) left the village with 3 children (Mechthilde/Matilda, Charitas and Johann) and emigrated to America in 1861. They arrived in Baltimore on 16 July 1861 from Bremen (ship Ernestine, "Reikert") and the family settled in Indiana where Eva's brother already lived.
