Adams, KS. Otis Leon Coon, 84, went to be with the Lord on May 9, 2012 after a long battle with Alzheimer Disease. He was born to Otis Oliver and Mary Ethel (Harper) Coon on March 25, 1928 at home in Mulvane, KS. He lived most of his life on the family farm 1.5 miles east of Adams. This farm was originally purchased by his Grandfather Allen Ellsworth Coon in 1900 and in 1928 by his Father Otis Oliver Coon.
He graduated from Adams High School in 1946 and then went to K-State University for one year. He returned home to help with the family farm and spent summers custom harvesting with his Uncle Dewey Harper. He was drafted for WW II but the war ended before he was to report. He was later called up to fight in the Korean War and did so proudly as a Senior Track Mechanic in the 25th Infantry Division from August 1951 till honorably discharged in April 1953.
Hired by a bridge builder, after the war, he found himself working in McPherson County near the town of Marquette where he met and was married to Virginia Elaine Sjogren at Marquette, KS on April 19th, 1954. They made their home in rural Adams, Kansas becoming the third Coon generation to purchase the farm and raise a family there. Otis grew mostly wheat and raised Aberdeen-Angus cattle, retiring partly in the late 1980's turning the work over to son Frank. Then he retired completely when he became an ordained pastor at the Spivey Community Church in 1993 and served in that capacity until 1997. His mechanic skills served him and others well! He patented an invention which was built and sold by the Farrar Corporation back when small round bales were popular. He also served each summer as a maintenance handyman at Camp Salvation located near Trinidad, CO from 1997 to 2004. Some of his Grandchildren attended Church Camp there and his Son Allen was the Director, so it was a double blessing for him.
Otis is survived by his wife of 58 years Virginia Coon, daughter Nancy Walker (Sharon, KS), daughter Gayle Thornbro and husband Michael (Norwich, KS), son Otis Allen Coon and wife Betty (Bird City, KS), and son Frank Coon (Norwich, KS), 18 grandchildren and 23 plus great-grandchildren. He was preceded-in-death by his parents Otis Oliver Coon and Mary Ethel (Harper) Coon. He is the first sibling of his family to die. He is also survived by his brothers and sisters; Bill Coon and wife Helen – Kingman, KS., Mary Louise Hughes and husband Randle – Wichita, KS, Tessie Jane Hibbs – Rago, KS, Lois O'Neil – Abilene, KS, Marvin Coon – Anthony, KS, and Phyllis Wiley – New Carlisle, OH.
Visitation with the family present will be held from 5:00 until 7:00 p.m. on Saturday at the Prairie Rose Funeral Home in Harper.
Funeral services will be held at 10:00 a.m. Monday, May 14, 2012 at the Milton Baptist Church with Otis Allen Coon officiating. Military rites by the Fort Riley Honor Guard will follow at the Upchurch Cemetery in Norwich, Kansas.
Memorials have been established at the not-for-profit Hospice Care of Kansas that served the family tremendously in their time of need.
