James Duffy Newsome was born 11 July 1850 in Newcastle, Giles County,Virginia to Hartwell Barham and Narcissa Watts Newsome.
James married Anna Elizabeth Kennedy 3 April 1870. Family oral history states he and Anna's brother carried mail together in Virginia and when he went to visit the family he met Anna.
James and Anna were the parents of Ahio Newsome, Phylena Elizabeth Newsome Turley, Molissie Belle Newsome Burton, Effie Teresa Newsome Watkins, James Edgar Newsome,Emma Pearl Newsome Wade, Oliver Cleveland Newsome, Sarah A Newsome, William Wallace Newsome, Lyda Sophia Newsome and Emmett Rex Newsome.Ahia, Sarah and William all died in infancy. Anna Elizabeth preceded her husband in death and James died in Oklahoma at the home of one of his daughters.

J.D. Newsome, for many years a resident of this city, died Thursday at Shawnee, Oklahoma, where he has made his home for some time. The remains were brought to this city and the funeral was held Saturday afternoon from the Pritchard funeral home, in charge of Rev. S L Buckner of the Methodist church, and burial was made in Highland cemetery.
