Hartwell was a miller by trade. He married first, Elizabeth Gray, 1820 in Guilford Co., NC, and they had five children:Lucy(1821-1911), Gilliam (1823-1890), Mary "Lottie" (1831-1916), Washington H. (1832-1864) and Hartwell Barham , Jr. (1838-1863). About 1831 he had an affair with a woman named Mary Cook which produced another child, William(1832-1882). Nevertheless Elizabeth stayed by him and they moved to Stokes (Now Forsyth) County, NC about 1841. In 1842 Hart ran up a large amount of debt and was foreclosed upon and basically ran out of town. He fled to Virginia and left Elizabeth and his six children behind. It does not appear there was ever a divorce, but when he resettled himself in Botetourt (Now Craig) Co., Virginia, he remarried (1845) to Narcissa Watts. This marriage produced another five children:Sarah T. "Sallie" (1846-1904), John M.(1848-1873), James Duffy (1851-1925), Laura Alice "Allie" (1853-1914) and an unnamed infant (1854-1854). Narcissa died in 1854 and Hart remarried in 1857 to Catherine Beckner in Craig Co., Virginia. It is not entirely known if there were kids from this marriage. Hart is last found on the 1870 census living in Giles Co., Virginia. He presumably died there between 1870 and 1880. His burial location is unknown, but we'd be pleased to find it.
