September 25, 1861 in Elgin, Illinois her husband Isaac enlisted as a "Union Soldier" in the 52nd Illinois Infantry, Company G as a private. His muster date was November 19, 1861.

1863 • Burlington, Kane County, Illinois census, Isaac applied for Military pension #3574609; Isaac served eight months, and then, owing to a wound, returned home for a short time, but upon his return to the army he was discharged, as his health had failed. He passed shortly thereafter on April 15, 1864 in Rutland, Kane County, Illinois.

After Isaac's death, Mary (Putnam) Atkinson applied Widow's pension application #9336908. He was buried at the Udina Cemetery, row 13, grave 10. His headstone reads ATKINSON, ISAAC CIVIL WAR Company A, Regiment 52, Illinois Inf.
