Rushville Times, 28 Jun 1917:

Melissa Catherine, only child of Edward P. and Mary E. (Sellers) King, was born one mile north of Brooklyn, July 15th, 1867, and passed away at her home one mile southwest of Brooklyn, June 21, 1917, aged 49 years, 11 months, and 6 days. Her childhood until seven years of age was lived near Brooklyn, then the family moved to Cherokee county Kansas, returning to Brooklyn six years later, where she lived until her life closed.

She was united in marriage to Wm. Hoelscher, Sept 1, 1886. To this union were born ten children, among them being two pairs of twin boys.

Her entire life was spent in ministering to others. She watched faithfully over the closing months of both her mother's and father's lives, giving them a faithful daughter's care. Only as a loving mother can, she minister to the needs of her children while they were still in the home next. She always willingly sacrificed herself for the good of the family, and particularly two instances of serious protracted illness did she prove a mother's love in full measure.

As a neighbor and friend she gave her genial sunny nature and enjoyed paying attention to the requirements of social life. She was progressive in her ideas, always supporting liberally all means for moral and educational advancement of the younger generation.

Few indeed are those who have filled so admirably the various offices of daughter, wife, mother, neighbor, and friend.

She leaves to mourn her loss her husband and the following children Viola, Hansel, Mansel, and Florian at home. Ed, Fred and Esther Jones of Brooklyn, Mell and Harlen of Macomb and Pansy Ayers of Camden.
