Dan Sullivan, Toole Pioneer, Is Dead at 91

Former Hotel Man, Once Resident of Diamond City, Dies

SHELBY, April 18-(special)- Toole county’s oldest pioneer resident, Dan Sullivan, 91, died Wednesday night at Camas Hot Springs. Funeral services will be held Monday at 10 a.m. at St. William’s Catholic church in Shelby.

Sullivan came to Montana in 1865 when a youth and first lived at Diamond City. His father, Michael Sullivan was said to be the first settler in the Missouri river valley.

Dan Sullivan was married in 1874 to Louisa Jane Ranney, and to this union where born 11 Children 7 of whom survive. After residing at Townsend for 10 years. Sullivan moved in 1885 to a site 15 miles southwest of Shelby on the Marias river bottom. There a he established one of the largest of the old-timer’s cattle ranches. Soon after the railroad was built through here Sullivan established the first hotel in Shelby, called the Merchants hotel, which burned down and was then rebuilt and named the Sullivan hotel. This later structure was also burned and the new building which supplanted it was for many years one of the largest hotels in north Montana.
Sullivan sold out to M. O. Gordon in 1926 and then moved to Camas HotSsprings, where he had spent most of his time since in the interest of his health. His wife preceded him in death in 1928.

Immediate survivors are four sons Fleury of Shelby, Fred of Stevensville, Mike of Cut Bank and Robert of Camas Hot Springs; also, three daughters Mrs. C. W. Sims of Shelby, Mrs. Frances Dobyns of Camas and Mrs. Anna Crouch of Elmo.
