Another Montana Pioneer Gone
Michael Sullivan, another of Montana's pioneers, passed away on Monday of this week at the home of his daughter, Mrs. John Murray, in Shelby, death being caused by the infirmities of old age. His remains were taken to Townsend, Montana, for burial on Tuesday.
Mr. Sullivan was born in Cork county, Ireland, nearly 87 years ago, arriving in the United Sates in 1844, after a seven-weeks trip in a sailing vessel. He was married to Miss Honora Sullivan in June of the same year. In 1865, Mr. and Mrs. Sullivan, accompanied by their seven children, crossed the plains from Arena, Wisconsin, to Virginia City, Montana, with Captain Knight's emigrant train after a trip lasting six months and six days. In November of the same year Mr. Sullivan and family moved to Diamond City, Montana, and in the spring of 1866, they located on a ranch in the Missouri valley, where the parents resided for a number of years, when they moved to Townsend, Montana, where Mrs. Sullivan passed away about six years ago at the advanced age of 83 years.
Since the death of his wife in Townsend, Mr. Sullivan had made his home with his children in Shelby. He was of a cheerful disposition, a friend to the right and a bitter enemy to the wrong.
He is survived by four children, Daniel Sullivan, Mrs. John Murray, Mrs. Peter Hughes of Shelby, and D. R. Sullivan of Joliet, Montana, all of whom, together with a number of loving grandchildren, were with him in his last days. Would that such noble humanity lives on and on!
