Sept. 27, 1922 - May 14, 2012

Mass of Christian Burial will be 10:00 a.m. Thursday, May 17, 2012 at Country Manor Chapel, Sartell for Gilbert J. Ackerman, age 89, who passed away Monday at Country Manor Health Care Center, Sartell. Rev. Al Stangl will officiate and burial will be at Annunciation Cemetery, Mayhew Lake.
Gilbert was born Sept. 27, 1922 in Timber Lake, SD to Bartholomew & Katherine (Ditter) Ackerman. He grew up in Foley and lived in the Mayhew Lake/Popple Creek area most of his life. Gilbert married Albina Gapinski on Oct. 9, 1945. He was a farmer for over 50 years and also worked as a block layer, drove milk truck, and worked in grain elevators in his early years. Gilbert was a member of Annunciation Catholic Church in Mayhew Lake, St. Michael's Catholic Church in St. Cloud and Country Manor Chapel in Sartell. Gilbert served on the Mayhew Lake Township Board for 35 years, as a fire warden for 36 years, and a 4-H Leader for 20 years. He was a member and past president of the Foley Lions where he was awarded the Helen Keller Fellowship Award and the Melvin Jones Fellowship Award. He enjoyed woodworking especially making nativity scenes. Gilbert was a hard working man with a strong faith who was very proud of his family and his farm.

Survivors include his wife of 66 years, Albina of Sartell; 12 daughters and 1 son, Nancy Lahr of Scottsdale, AZ, Susan Markwardt of Zimmerman, Betty Braun of Hutchinson, Douglas (Maria) Ackerman of Royalton, JoAnn Ackerman of Wells, Janie (James) Case of St. Joseph, Joan (Raymond) Otto of Foley, Hope (Rick) Morrison of Rice, Mary Ann Ziebarth of Sauk Rapids, Carol (James) Truenow of Sauk Rapids, Jennifer (Philip) Slinden of Atwater, Gail (Dan) Clearwater of Appleton, WI, and June Ackerman of St. Cloud; sister and brothers, Evelyn (Arvin) Olson of Twin Valley, Ken (Mary) Ackerman of Fridley, and Adrian (Katie) Ackerman of Sauk Rapids; sister-in-law, Phyllis Ackerman of Clear Lake; 29 grandchildren and 28 great grandchildren.

Gilbert was preceded in death by his parents; sisters, Marion Bauer and Eleanor McCoy; brother, Duane Ackerman; granddaughter, Lisa Case; and sons-in-law, Donald Braun, Dale Doering, and Tim Byron.
