John Sidney Smith, better known as Sid, was born the same year that the Civil War ended, in what is now the Catawba Heights section of Gaston County, North Carolina. He was the son of John Benny Smith and Rachel Jane Ford (both buried in "Old" Goshen Cemetery at North Belmont).

At the age of twenty, Sid married Mary Annie Armstrong February, 4th, 1886 . She was know as Annie, and was the daughter of George Stanhope Armstrong and Mary "Polly" Hawkins. They were from the area between Stanley and Dallas in Gaston County, North Carolina.

Sid and Annie had a working farm in the Springwood Section of Gaston County, near Four Point. They had 12 Children, their descendants now helping to fill modern day Gaston County.
