Emma was know as Emmie to family and friends. She was born and raised on the family farm in the Springwood Section of North Belmont, across from Four Points. She was a devout Christian, and attended Hickory Grove Baptist Church until terminal illness stopped her. She was a daily example to her children and grandchildren.

She married Gilbert Franklin (Gil) Benfield, who was the son of John Franklin Benfield, and Harriet Green Wilkinson. They were married in her fathers home 22 January 1913, in the presence of family and friends. The marriage was preformed by Rev. Caldwell, and the witnesses were her uncle Walter V. Smith, her brother-in-law Hester W. Abernethy, and L.M.Flowers.

Emmie and Gil had 7 children, 6 that survived to adulthood.
Many of their descendants still live in Gaston County.
