Bessie was the third child and second daughter of David and Rosa Schaffer. She was born 9 Nov 1889 in New York. The family moved to Chicago, Illinois before 1900.

As a young teenager Bessie was sent to stay with an aunt in Helena, Montana. Why she was sent there and the name of the aunt is not known. While in Montana she met Frank Lohman and they were married in Butte, Montana on April 24, 1906, when she was 16. The wedding took place only after her agreement to become a Roman Catholic, which estranged her from her Jewish family, especially her father.

Her father died in Chicago in 1909. After the birth of her first child Francis in 1912, Bessie traveled to Chicago with her young son to visit her family. Then her mother died in 1917.

Bessie's older sister Eva married Edward Barnes in 1915 and Eva and Ed came to Butte Montana in 1916 to visit Bessie. But Eva died at age 34 in 1918. After Eva's death, and with her parents already gone, Bessie had less contact with the rest of her birth family.

Bessie and Frank Lohman raised five children in Butte Montana: Francis (1912-1974); Marguerite (1915-1967); John (1921-2017); William (1924-2002); and Alice (1928-2001.)

Her husband Frank died of lung cancer at the age of 60 in May, 1945. Bessie's health in her later years was also poor and she died on Feb. 23, 1951 in Butte, Montana, at the age of 61.
