Peter J. Aiello passed peacefully in his sleep on Dec. 11, 2011. Born on Mar. 20, 1926 to Frank and Mamie Aiello, the third youngest of their eleven children. As a member of the "World's Greatest Generation", Pete was extremely proud of his service in the U.S. Navy during World War II. He first served on the USS Nestor until Oct. 9, 1945 when the crew had to abandon ship as it was wrecked in Typhoon "Louise" in Buckner Bay, Okinawa. He then served on the USS Crittenden that joined in Operation Crossroads, the atomic bomb tests in the Bikini Atoll. His ship was severely damaged and suffered radioactive contamination by the Able and Baker atomic bomb detonations in Jul. 1946. The Crittenden was later towed back to San Francisco and sunk off the Farallon Islands in an explosives test. His military service ended Feb. 20, 1947.
Pete had a passion for customizing and restoring automobiles and enjoying his daily doughnuts with friends. His final auto project after retirement was to personally restore his award-winning 1940 Packard 120 Sedan affectionately known as "Papa's Packard."
Predeceased by the love of his life, Margaret (Marge); he is survived by sons Peter F. Aiello (Theresa) and Michael J. Aiello (girlfriend, Kimberly Telleria); grandchildren Andrew (girlfriend Lizzie Nelson), Brendan (fiancée Morgan Pinckney) and Rachelle. He will be dearly missed by his immediate family including several nieces and nephews and the many friends at the Royal Pin doughnut shop, his Millbrae neighbors, and the friends from various car clubs and shows. He will always be remembered as a kind and gentle soul with a quick wit and sense of humor until the very end.
Friends and family are invited to visit after 3 p.m. until 6 p.m. on Sunday, Dec. 18, 2011 where a vigil service will begin at 4 p.m. at Chapel of the Highlands, 194 Millwood Dr. at El Camino Real in Millbrae. The Funeral liturgy will be on Monday, Dec. 19, 2011, 11 a.m. also at the Chapel. Committal will follow at Holy Cross Cemetery in Colma. In lieu of flowers, contributions can be made in Pete's memory to the Alzheimer's Association.
