ROUND ROCK, Texas (KXAN) - A 21-year-old soldier from Round Rock died on Saturday in Afghanistan, the U.S. Defense Department said.

Army Spc. Alex Hernandez III died in Kandahar. He was assigned to 3rd Battalion, 25th Aviation Regiment, 25th Combat Aviation Brigade, 25th Infantry Division, Wheeler Army Airfield, Hawaii.

According to the the 25th Combat Aviation Brigade, Hernandez was found unresponsive in his room, the incident is under investigation.

Hernandez joince the Army in July 2009 and most recently served as a Door Gunner.

Before he came to Hawaii, he was a Test Equipment Operator and attended Basic Training at Fort Sill, Oklahoma.

Spc. Hernandez's awards and decorations include the National Defense Service Medal, Afghanistan Campaign Medal, Global War on Terrorism Medal, Army Service Ribbon, Overseas Service Ribbon, NATO Medal, and an Aviator Badge.

Hernandez is survived by his wife Tyasia Pompy.

Alex Hernandez III, age 21, passed away Saturday, May 12, 2012 in Afghanistan.

He is survived by his wife Tyasia Hernandez of Killeen; his mother, Traci Ortiz and father, Alex Hernandez, Jr.; siblings; and numerous other loving family and friends.

The family will receive friends from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m., Thursday, May 24, 2012 at Cook-Walden/Forest Oaks Funeral Home. Recitation of the Holy Rosary will follow at 7:00 p.m. in the Chapel of Cook-Walden/Forest Oaks Funeral Home.

Funeral Mass will be celebrated at 10:00 a.m., Friday, May 25, 2012 at St. Ignatius Martyr Catholic Church, 126 W. Oltorf Street with Father Bill Wack, Celebrant. Interment will follow at Cook-Walden/Forest Oaks Memorial Park.
