Albert " Al" D. Gaswint, 72, passed away Wednesday, Nov. 13, 2002, at his Lewiston home.

Al was born March 10, 1930, in Tucson, Ariz., to Albert C. Gaswint and Esther (Backert) Gaswint.

During his early years, his family followed construction work in Arizona and Colorado.

He met his future wife, Donna McDaniel, in the sixth grade in Hotchkiss, Colo. His family later moved to Ohio and California.

At age 15 he began working with his father as a carpenter. He later moved to Lewiston and graduated from carpentry school in 1949, becoming a journeyman at age 19.

After writing letters for six years, Al and Donna were married on Aug. 22, 1948, in Warden, Wash. They followed his work in Warden; North Richland, Wash.; Seattle; Durango, Colo.; Grants, N.M.; South Lake Tahoe, Calif.; Emmett, Idaho; and Lewiston, where he and Donna lived for the last 22 years.

His last days were spent at home, praying with friends and family. He told them, "The Lord gave me three score and 10 years. Anything on top of that is gravy."

He was preceded in death by his parents; his son, Dwight; his brothers, Wendel and George; and his sisters, LaVerne, Anna, and Polly.

The funeral will be Saturday at 11 a.m. at Malcolm's Brower-Wann Memorial Chapel in Lewiston. Al's longtime friend, Pastor Paul McBride of Lacey, Wash., will officiate.
