Wilbur was the son of Newton and Ocelia Brown. In 1900, the family San Saba County, Texas (Pct 2), according to the 1900 US Federal Census. Children living in the home were: Nettie C (13), Hattie O (11), Wilbur M (6), Armor L (3) and Worth J (1).

Wilbur enlisted in the Army at Ellington Field, Houston, Texas, in December 1917. He was just shy of his 24th birthday. Assigned to the 194th Aero Squadron. He was discharged with the rank of 1st Sergeant in February 1918. He was discharged in February 1919 while attached to the Flying School at Ellington Field.

Wilbur Martin Brown and his wife Ann, lived in College Station, Brazos County, Texas, according to the 1940 US Federal Census. Two children were living in the home: Wilbur M Jr (14) and Barbara (9)
