He was baptized in Boston 28 Aug 1639, the son of James Penniman and Lydia Eliot Penniman of Braintree.

He was one of the original proprietors of Mendon in 1663. He was elected selectman in 1693; deacon 1679 to 1700; made a freeman in 1678. He was in King Philip's War in 1675. Of interest is that the birthplace of President John Adams was built by Joseph Penniman in 1681. On October 30 1735,John Adams was born in the upper right bedchamber of this farm cottage.

He married first, 25 Sep 1666, Waiting Robinson.

He married second, 10 May 1693, Sarah Bass Stone, the widow of John Stone.

Children(by first marriage): Joseph Penniman Jr, Moses Penniman, Mary Penniman, Moses Penniman, Deborah Penniman, and James Penniman.
