Alf G. Nelson, 74, 515 Grace St. died Monday morning at St. John's Hospital, where he had been a patient since last Thursday.

Born in Eau Claire, Wis., October 25, 1894, he was the son of Hannah and Ole Nelson. He was schooled in Eau Claire and graduated from Eau Claire High School with the class of 1913. He was also a graduate of the Eau Claire Business School.

He began employment with Northern States Power Company in Eau Claire and then transferred to Red Wing. He married Ellen Soderholm June 1, 1918 in Red Wing.

He served with the U.S. Navy from June 1918 to September of 1921. On his discharge, he was employed by the Red Wing Shoe Company as a bookkeeper, until his transfer to the LaGrange Shoe Company in 1939. He was superintendent and office manager there until his retirement in 1959. A member of the First Lutheran Church, he had served as a member of the church council and also participated on various other committees. He was a member of the Leo C. Peterson post of the American Legion and had been a member of the Legion drum and bugle corps. He had also been a Post Commander of the Legion.

He suffered a heart attack July 16 of this year and had been in failing health ever since.

Survivors include his wife, Ellen; one daughter, Mrs. Phyllis R. Carlson of Iowa City, Iowa; three sons, Philip Marvin Nelson of Northfield, Harold G. Nelson of Richfield, and Arnold Nelson of Red Wing; 12 grandchildren; and one great-grandchild. His parents and two brothers preceded him in death.

Funeral services will be held Thursday at 2 p.m. at the First Lutheran Church. The Rev. A. B. Walfrid will officiate and burial will be in Oakwood Cemetery.

Friends may call at the Bodelson Funeral Home Wednesday from 3 to 9 p.m. and Thursday at the church from 11:30 to the time of services. Memorials to the church or to the heart fund are preferred. --Obituary from the Red Wing Daily Republican Eagle September 2, 1969
