A Tulane four-letter athlete (football, baseball, basketball and track), he was most noted for his game-saving touchdown for Tulane in the first Sugar Bowl Classic, Jan. 1, 1935.
"Little Monk" was head football coach at Tulane from 1942-1947, athletic director from 1945-1947, and director of student activities from 1948-1949.
The nickname "Little Monk" was given to him because his father, Claude "Big Monk" Simons Sr., was the trainer at Tulane during the younger Simon's tenure there.
He was survived by his widow Jeanne and two sons, Claude "Monk" Simons III and Dr. Stanley C. Simons.
