Civil War Veteran

Company A, 97th Regiment
Pennsylvania Volunteers

Private Thomas Ringler, a farmer from Perkiomen Bridge, Montgomery County, Pennsylvania, enlisted at age 25 on Aug. 22, 1861, in Company A, 97th Pennsylvania Volunteer Infantry for a period of 3 yrs.; . He reenlisted as a veteran at Fernandina, Florida on March 16, 1864, to date from Jan. 1, 1864 and was wounded in the right shoulder during action at Foster's Place, Bermuda Hundred, Va , on May 18, 1864. He was absent in the U. S. Hospital at Annapolis, Md. When the regiment mustered out and was discharged from the Chestnut Hill Hospital at Philadelphia on Sept. 9, 1865.

--I had written before that I was confused about the dates on the tombstone and on the Burial Card. It appears that the tombstone is that of Elizabeth, wife of Thomas whom very well could have died in 1881 but was born in 1840, according to the 1880 census. The tombstone may even say 1840, it looks as though the 4 could be worn enough to appear as a 1. ( He Married the second time to Vinie Ringler in 1884). He was still been living at Oxford as a widower in the household of William Alexander at the time of the 1910 census. --

I have since located Thomas' Civil War Pension Card that lists his date of death as Nov. 8, 1911, He was born in March 1837. Elizabeth was born in Ohio and did die in 1881. Vinie, his second wife and a widow when he married her in 1884, was born in Pennsylvania on Nov. 9, 1850 and died on Jul 21, 1908

I believe the information on the burial card was taken from Elizabeth's tombstone and the transcriber thought it was Thomas' grave, mistaking the 1840 birth date as 1810.
