Orangeburg - Joseph Burdell Sutcliffe Jr., 79, of 2239 Norway Road, Orangeburg, died Sunday, Nov. 3, 2002, at The Regional Medical Center in Orangeburg. Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 5, at Thompson Funeral Home Chapel in Orangeburg, with the Rev. Frank Hay, the Rev. Henry Cooper, the Rev. Obie Dyches, and the Rev. Donald Royster Sr. officiating. Burial will be in Memorial Park Cemetery in Orangeburg. Active pallbearers will be Michael Brown, Josh Bates, John Bates, Christopher Forwood, Phillip Proveaux, Donald Smoak Sr., Charles Davis Jr., Judson Davis, Alexander Sutcliffe, and Daniel Forwood. Honorary pallbearers will be nephews and employees of Coca-Cola and the Men's Sunday School Class and members of the Young Adult Sunday School Class of Bethany Baptist Church. Mr. Sutcliffe was born Aug. 22, 1923, in Norway, a son of the late Joseph Burdell Sutcliffe Sr., and the late Rena Hutto Sutcliffe. He was a graduate of Willow High School in Norway. He served in the U.S. Army Air Corps and he served in China for two years during World War II. He was a member of Bethany Baptist Church; a lifetime Deacon; a former Sunday School superintendent for many years and a former Sunday school teacher for many years at Bethany Baptist Church. He was a lover of nature. His hobby was restoring antique furniture which graces many homes all over the state. He was first married to the late Meary Sweatman Sutcliffe. Survivors include his wife of 42 years, Mrs. Carolyn Hartzog Sutcliffe of Orangeburg; three daughters and sons-in-law, Billie and Charles Brown of Bolentown, Kathy and Peter Forwood of Greenville, Wanda and Larry Bates of Cope; one son and daughter-in-law, Lt. Col. Joseph and Mary Sutcliffe of Savannah, Ga.; nine grandchildren; Sally Brown of Neeses, Michael Brown of Columbia, Ashlyn Bates of Cope, Josh Bates of Columbia, John Bates of Cope, Amy and Christian McPoland of Greenville, Christopher Forwood of Florida, Daniel Forwood of Greenville, Alexander Sutcliffe of Savannah, Ga.; and a number of nieces and nephews. Friends may call at the residence, 2239 Norway Road, Orangeburg, and at Thompson Funeral Home of Orangeburg. Visitation will be held from 6 to 8 p.m. Monday, Nov. 4, at Thompson Funeral Home of Orangeburg.
