On Sept 30, 1863, Franklin suffered an unusual cold spell with a heavy frost. Since the prematurely cold weather was unexpected, no fired were laid in the Marshall home, and its master, working late into the night on a law case, became thoroughly chilled. He died two weeks later on Oct 3 from an illness developed from that night.
